Saint John Vianney Theological Seminary (SJVTS) was built to serve the seminarians of ecclesiastical Cagayan de Oro, although it also opens its doors to other ecclesiastical jurisdictions, such as Surigao, Butuan, Malaybalay, and Tandag.
Founded in 1985, the seminary is an inter-diocesan theological institution that prepares and forms candidates for priesthood in the Catholic Church.
In order to achieve its mission of creating priests, SJVTS targets the seminarians’ human, intellectual, pastoral, and spiritual aspects. The seminary transforms these men; preparing them to a special calling in the kingdom of God. With diligence and perseverance, these seminarians may eventually become parish servant-leaders, seminary facilitators or diocesan administrators.
Since the seminary also offers graduate programs in theology, SJVTS is also open to externs.
Overall, St. John Vianney Theological Seminary trains seminarians to become teachers, scholars, catechists, campus ministers, church workers, formators, and animators for the greater glory of the Lord.
The construction of SJVTS started during the time of Archbishop Cronin and ended by the time when Fr. Tuquib was archbishop.
Cagayan de Oro’s archdiocese has been so blessed with so many seminarians; so much that the seminary sometimes has to refuse applicants because of lack of space.
Over the years, SJVTS has successfully produced so many clergymen. Although older priests are the products of San Jose Seminary (Manila), Santo Tomas Central Seminary (Manila), REMASE (Davao) or San Carlos Seminary (Cebu or Makati), many of CDO’s younger clergymen are from St. John Vianney Theology Seminary.
